I know, I know, I know what you have been hearing. I get why you are properly looking at me sideways right now. There are a lot of controversies and hot-button topics surrounding nutrition especially weight loss related issues. I am sure most people’s first lesson about healthy eating or weight management is the famous “Do not eat after 6pm”
Midnight snackers’ rejoice! There is new evidence that you do not have to eat early in the day to lose weight. According to studies meal timing does not make a difference for weight loss if you are eating the same total amount of calories. Its worthy to remember that for weight loss to occur there must be caloric deficit. This validates the point that as long as you are consuming fewer calories then you are taking in the timing is immaterial.
However, eating at night may lead to more junk food especially if alcohol is involved. The sole challenge with eating at night is that it might be linked to poor choices. Nighttime snacking tendencies are most likely to involve alcohol and there is good evidence that tipsy people tend to reach for unhealthy snacks and overindulge. According to this research by Dr. Nisa Maruthur associate professor of medicine at John Hopkins University Baltimore there is no reason for late night eating to be inherently unhealthy. And when it comes to weight loss calories is the main determinant more than when you eat.
These findings will be presented to the American Heart Association’s Scientific Session November 2020. Many researchers are also compiling more detailed findings from this study and looking at data about how meal timing might affect blood sugar, insulin, and other hormones.
